60th Anniversary Series: Meet Executive Director Sandy Marek

Two years into her role as Executive Director of Tutoring Chicago, Sandy Marek continues to shape the organization with vision, compassion, and a deep commitment to student success. Under her leadership, Tutoring Chicago has grown steadily, now adding 150 students annually to the more than 1,000 already enrolled in the program.

As a tutor meeting with a student weekly herself, Sandy shared that about 60% of students remain with the same tutor for two or more years, forming meaningful relationships that go far beyond academics. Whether they’re playing games, tackling homework, or simply talking, these weekly sessions create a space where students feel seen, supported, and empowered.

What began as a necessary pivot during the pandemic has become a permanent fixture, with half of students now served online and half in person. Sandy and Tutoring Chicago chose to retain virtual tutoring, recognizing that tutoring should provide accessible learning environments. Based on the organization’s biannual assessments, both formats yield similar academic and interpersonal outcomes. The flexibility of virtual tutoring has been key to expanding access and meeting students where they are.

As a leader, Sandy emphasizes the power of committed individuals—from the board of directors to tutors to Tutoring Chicago’s full-time staff. Their dedication and shared passion for helping students are what make the organization thrive and continue to grow. She’s proud of the team’s ability to adapt and innovate, especially in times of challenge.

Looking ahead, Sandy envisions Tutoring Chicago continuing to rise to meet future needs, just as it has since its beginnings in Cabrini Green. Whether through new resources, evolving formats, or fresh challenges, the organization remains steadfast in keeping students at the heart of everything it does.
