Autumn and Caroline: They “Clicked” Through Online Tutoring!
Eleven-year old Autumn and her tutor Caroline have worked together virtually for almost 3 years. Caroline, who was a Loyola University student when they began tutoring, describes them as having an instant connection. Today, Autumn’s mom, Alicia, describes their relationship as being akin to “A big sister and a little sister!”
In elementary school, Autumn struggled with reading and math.“Her teacher suggested that Autumn would benefit from one-on-one attention,” says Alicia. Autumn’s mom was not only looking for academic support, but for someone with the patience and attentiveness to address Autumn’s unique needs. “Once we connected with Caroline, she had the patience to listen to Autumn’s needs and to help her feel comfortable,” says Alicia.
“Autumn is so special,” says Caroline, who has established some traditions to help keep Autumn engaged during tutoring. At the beginning of each session Caroline asks Autumn about her week and how school was that day. “I call it their girl talk!” Alicia says, “It’s a really nice way to help Autumn understand her week and that other people also are doing things during the week.” She also appreciates how Caroline redirects Autumn when she gets frustrated with tough subjects, and is able to guide her back with a more positive mindset.
Caroline continues to be impressed by Autumn’s self-motivation and growth. After their first year together, Caroline sent Autumn off to enjoy the summer with some extra materials to work on in her spare time, and when they came back Autumn surprised Caroline.“I thought maybe we would have to review some of our reading, but she came back and I was like who is this girl! She was absolutely killing it,” says Caroline. In fact, Autumn was doing so well that Caroline encouraged her to try a more challenging reading level. “She helps me with reading…we like to read about Flat Stanley,” says Autumn.
As they continue tutoring together, the possibilities are endless for Autumn, who says she would like to be a rock star, YouTuber AND teacher when she grows up! “She is a kind and loving girl that deserves the world,” says Caroline.
