July Pair of the Month
When Maria first met Dream, she saw a bright, thoughtful student who just needed a little confidence boost. Now? Dream’s diving into math problems headfirst and leading the way.
“She’ll map out her plan and ask for help if she’s stuck,” Maria shared. “Even lining up the steps of a formula feels automatic now, and watching that click has been amazing.”
The start of each session is a highlight. “Dream walks me through her gradebook, reads bits of her assignments, and we map out what’s due next,” said Maria. “It’s half catch-up, half celebration, and sets the tone for a great session.”
Their connection goes far beyond schoolwork. “We talk about everything – weekend plans, class dances, middle school drama,” Maria said. “It reminds me how fun seventh grade really is.”
The turning point? When warm-ups disappeared. “Now we dive straight in – debating Abbott Elementary, making Pinterest boards, even planning summer ideas for her trip to Florida.”
As a former Title I student, Maria knows firsthand how powerful mentorship can be. “Tutoring has only reinforced that. I had people open doors for me – now I get to do the same.”
Her advice to future tutors? “Say yes. Tutoring Chicago makes it easy to show up prepared and make a real impact.”
