Dear Parents and Tutors,
Tutoring Chicago’s school year has started and we want to thank all of our parents and tutors for your patience as we work through all the absences and technical difficulties this new era of digital tutoring has presented.
We had anticipated the majority of technical difficulties would happen during the first two weeks of tutoring. In previous years, we had to worry about students and tutors making it to our tutoring locations on the first night. This year, we worried about the families we served not having the hardware and internet capabilities to join us; we worried about families who had never even heard of Zoom; and we worried about students who, if not for our free tutoring program, would fall further behind in a new technology reliant school year.
To help all of our families and tutors get set up, we’ve detailed below the answers and solutions (including videos) to the questions and issues we’ve seen the most in the last two weeks from both our volunteers and our families.
Issue: We missed the first two sessions
As we move forward with the tutoring year, we want to reiterate that attendance is crucial for the students and required to be in the program. It goes without saying that if the student is not in attendance, they are not benefitting from the program.
Tutoring Chicago respects the time commitment of our volunteers, whether they are joining us weekly or during our monthly hosted sessions. Our tutors are volunteering their time each week to work with a student and support their progress this year.
We want to make sure that all enrolled students and volunteers commit to the program for the 2020-21 school year. Weekly attendance is required to be in the program. As with prior school years, students and tutors who are still absent after the 3rd session will be removed from our rosters and their counterparts will be reassigned.
Please note the upcoming schedule and deadlines for attendance:
Mondays: No tutoring on October 12th due to the holiday. Deadline to attend is Monday, October 19th.
Tuesdays: Deadline to attend is October 13th
Wednesdays: Deadline to attend is October 14th.
If you have been trying week-after-week to sign in and have been in contact with your Site Manager, please take the time to follow the instructions and tips below prior to your next session. If you still are not able to log in, please reply to this email and a staff member will follow up.
Issue: We cannot get on Zoom
All hosted tutoring sessions require Zoom. For security purposes, all participants must have a Zoom account with a login and password. If you haven’t set this up, see the instructions below. Once this is set up on a device, it should stay signed in for each week. If your student is using multiple devices, make sure that Zoom is downloaded on each device and you’re logged in with your account information and password.
